Theme Analysis
In Artemis Fowl The Complex, Artemis the young boy genius in a time of crisis is in the middle of losing his mind. Through out this whole illness he finds out more about his compulsion disorder and how bad it has really gotten. Throughout Artemis' struggles in this novel he learns that compulsion is a specific subject can cause a person to lose focus on what is actually important.
During Artemis' mission to save the world he goes through many changes both physically and mentally. One of the first physical changes that is noticable in him is that he was more pale than he usually was. Throughout the time when this change was first picked up Artemis was very obsessive over the number five and was extremely nevrvous something bad was going to happen. When this change first started to develope it was more of nervous twitch but it then grew as his illness got worse into something that wouldnt go away. Later on in the book this goes away when he finally battles off his compulsion with numbers as well as a battle with his alter ego that takes control over his body.
Artemis not only has an obsession with the number five but as well as the number four. His compulsion with the number five and the number four are total opposites. Artemis belives that the number five is goodluck for him and that he has to do everything in multiples of five. This includes the number of words he speaks, the number of people he allows with him at one time, and even things such as the number of times he claps. On the other hand the number four to him is a symbol of death. At one point in the novel he explains that the number four sounds like the chinese word for death. For part of this being the reason he will never do anything in multiples of four. To overcome this he has to just fight his obsession of doing things in multiples of five and not caring about the number four. These are just a few things that explain Artemis' illness other wise known as Atlantis complex.
